Executive Chairman, liberty house group
Sanjeev Gupta is an international businessman and entrepreneur, heading a global enterprise with activities spanning steel production, engineering, power generation, banking, and commodities trading.
As Executive Chairman of Liberty House, he leads a fast-growing $7 billion global industrial group, head quartered in London, with additional global hubs in Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong, and further bases in over 30 countries.
Born into a family of industrialists in Punjab, he was educated in the UK and graduated with an MA in Economics and Management from the University of Cambridge. He founded Liberty House in 1992, while still an undergraduate, initially as a general merchant focused on Africa. Over the next 20 years the Group grew rapidly to become a global trading and supply chain specialist in steel and non-ferrous metals.
His growing reputation as an industrialist was further boosted by his bold decision to rescue and revive major steel, engineering and power generation operations right across the UK from 2013 onwards. Through a strategy that defied the perceptions of steel and engineering as dying industries, he acquired and successfully relaunched over 20 businesses, saving 2,000 jobs. He gained particular prominence as an industry leader with his bid to take over Tata Steel’s entire UK business, which was put up for sale in March 2016.
He continues to expand his operations both in the UK and worldwide, whilst also working and investing in his GREENSTEEL strategy to rejuvenate British manufacturing by creating a competitive, low-carbon sector based on renewable energy, re-melting of UK scrap steel and downstream engineering integration to make innovative products.
In a bid to further support industry, in late 2015 he entered into an agreement to acquire London-based Tungsten Bank and having received regulatory approval in November 2016 he completed the purchase in December 2016. The bank has been relaunched under the name of Wyelands Bank Plc as a specialist provider of supply chain and trade financing for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Sanjeev works closely with his father’s energy and commodities company, the SIMEC Group, under the umbrella of the Gupta Family Alliance. In this respect he is a major champion of renewable energy development, particularly tidal lagoon projects, in which his family is a major investor.
He lives in South Wales in the United Kingdom with his wife Nicola and their three young children.
